Funding for Inmate Work Squad contract in the amount of $67,148.00 is budgeted in the Local Option Gas Tax 1-6 Fuel Fund, account 1017-03232-5303401.
Since May 2011, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office and Board of County Commissioners have had a contract in place to provide the Department of Public Works for the use of inmate labor in work programs. The contract’s most recent renewal period expired on September 30, 2017. Staff, from both organizations, negotiated a new contract which includes a five percent (5%) increase from previous contract price of $63,950.00. The contract utilizes one (1) inmate work squad from the Hernando County Jail located on Spring Hill Drive. Annual cost for the inmate work squad is $67,148.00. The contract is for a one-year period with three one-year renewal periods, with a clause for annual increases equal to that given to all deputy sheriffs employed by the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.
The Department of Public Works Department and the Sheriff's Office request that the Board approve the renegotiated contract effective October 1, 2017 through September 30, 2018, and automatically extend for three (3) additional one (1) year terms if not terminated earlier.
